Dan Strickler was first introduced to the martial arts in 1950 at the age of 15. He started training in the “Koga method” of defensive tactics in a junior police program sponsored by his home town police department. He was intrigued by the joint locks and pressure points that he had been shown but was not deeply involved in the martial arts until 1963, when he began training in Judo and committed himself to the martial arts. While pursuing a military career, despite serving three tours of duty in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam conflict, he managed to study several styles including karate, taekwondo, and aikido during his travels, and upon returning to the U.S. he resumed his study of judo, earning his black belt in 1970. Then came more overseas duty in Thailand, then Germany for a second tour, returned to the States and retired from the Army in 1980. Mr. Strickler then began a second career with the Florida Department of Corrections. He taught Defensive Tactics for 15 years with the Department and, concentrating on the defensive aspects of Judo, he returned to the Jujitsu concepts from his beginnings in 1950. Primarily an empty handed fighter, he began to look around at styles that used weapons, and was introduced to Prof. Remy Presas, founder of Modern Arnis, a Filipino system that teaches sticks, empty hand defense against stick and knife, and includes aspects of all the Asian martial arts.

Mr. Strickler has trained in Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Filipino arts and has been awarded black belts in 5 different disciplines including Judo, Jujitsu, Ryukyu Kempo and Modern Arnis. Highest rank held is 7th Degree in both Judo and Jujistu,
